Since its foundation in 1912, the Society has been active in encouraging excellence in the planning and development of London, and in preserving and stimulating appreciation of its amenities and the best of its buildings. The objects of the Society are summarised in its motto which enjoins members to "guard the venerable, strive for the beautiful and take thought for the future".
