TRUST FRAMEWORK

No Dark Patterns Policy

This document forms part of the Switch4Good Trust Framework and explains how we operate in this area.

What Are Dark Patterns?

Dark patterns are deceptive design techniques used to manipulate users into making choices they didn't intend to make. They exploit human psychology and cognitive biases to trick users into actions that benefit the company at the user's expense.

At Switch4Good, we believe dark patterns are unethical and undermine trust. We are committed to transparent, honest design that respects user autonomy and decision-making.

Dark Patterns We Refuse to Use

Here are common dark patterns we explicitly refuse to use:

Roach Motel

Making it easy to sign up but difficult to cancel. We make it just as easy to cancel your account or opt out as it is to sign up.

Pre-Ticked Boxes

Pre-selecting options that benefit us. All consent boxes are unchecked by default. You must actively choose to opt in.

Misdirection

Using visual design to draw attention away from important information. We ensure all important information is clear and prominent.

Disguised Ads

Making ads look like content or buttons. All advertising is clearly labelled and distinguishable from content.

Trick Questions

Using confusing language or double negatives to trick users. Our language is clear, straightforward, and unambiguous.

Urgency & Scarcity Tactics

Creating false urgency or artificial scarcity to pressure decisions. We never use fake countdowns or false scarcity claims.

Confirmshaming

Using guilt or shame to pressure users into actions. Our buttons and options are neutral and non-judgmental.

Hidden Costs

Revealing costs only at the end of a process. All costs are disclosed upfront and clearly.

Our Ethical Design Principles

  • Clarity: Information is presented clearly and honestly.
  • Transparency: Users understand what they are agreeing to.
  • User Control: Users have genuine choice and control.
  • Respect: We respect user autonomy and decision-making.
  • Accessibility: Our design works for everyone.

How We Ensure Ethical Design

  • Regular design audits for dark patterns
  • User testing to ensure clarity and understanding
  • Design guidelines that prioritise user interests
  • Team training on ethical design practices
  • User feedback mechanisms to report concerns

Report Dark Patterns

If you spot a pattern on Switch4Good that feels manipulative, tell us. Email design@switch4good.co.uk. We aim to respond to all reports within 2 business days. We take all reports seriously and will investigate and fix any issues immediately.

Our Commitment

We are committed to ethical design that respects and empowers our users. Good design should make things easier, not trick people. Your trust is built on honest, transparent interactions, and we will never compromise that for short-term gains.
